About Exam :

GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science. The GATE score is used for admissions to post-graduate programs (e.g., M. E., M. Tech, direct Ph.D.) in centrally funded Indian institutes of higher education (i.e., institutes which are provided with financial assistance by MHRD and other Government agencies).

The score is also used by some Public and Private Sector Undertakings for employment processes. Direct recruitment to Group A level posts i.e., Senior Field Office (SFO Tele), Senior Research Officer (SRO) (Crypto) and SRO(S&T) in Cabinet Secretariat is now being done on the basis of GATE scores.

The GATE Exam consists of a single paper having 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The Duration of the exam is 3 hours. The GATE is an online Computer Based Exam and is not conducted in any other mode.

The GATE Paper comprises of two types of questions - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type Questions (NAT). Multiple Choice Questions will have a correct answer from four options given while Numerical Questions have to be calculated and answered with the help of a keypad. The GATE 2017 Question Paper will be designed to test students on their comprehension and application skills, recall as well as analytical abilities.

It may be noted that General Aptitude Questions are compulsory for all papers and will carry questions for 15 marks.

Negative Marking: There is Negative marking in GATE for the Multiple Choice Questions only. There will be a deduction of 1/3 marks for every wrong answer to a 1-mark multiple-choice question and 2/3 marks for every wrong answer to the 2 mark questions. There is no negative marking for numerical questions.
